May 9, 2025 (Washington, D.C.) The Partnership to Fight Infectious Disease (PFID)
released the following statement Friday in response to the U.S. surpassing 1,000
measles cases in 2025:
“Confirmed measles cases in the United States have now surpassed 1,000 – the
highest count in five years — and it’s only May. With outbreaks reported in 30 states
and three deaths already confirmed, this is a clear warning sign that our public health
defenses are under strain.
“Measles was declared eradicated in the U.S. in 2000 thanks to decades of scientific
breakthroughs, sound policy, and a widely available vaccine that has proven both safe
and effective for more than 50 years. But we’re now on track to see the most cases in
35 years and to lose our eradication status — troubling milestones as childhood
vaccination rates decline. Experts warn the true number of cases is likely even higher
due to missed diagnoses and underreporting.
“Measles is not a problem that requires new solutions. We already have the tools to
protect our communities — we just need to use them as recommended by pediatricians
and other medical experts.
“The Partnership to Fight Infectious Disease urges everyone to listen to their healthcare
providers and follow clear, evidence-based vaccine guidance to protect yourself and
others by getting vaccinated.
“We can keep America healthy by leaning into what we know works: strong
immunization programs, reliable data, and honest communication. We cannot afford to
let preventable diseases take hold again.”
